Whether you are struggling to lose weight, suffering from pain (from back ache to arthritis), feeling stressed or just looking for an exhilarating form of exercise yoga is for you. In all its forms yoga is about union between body, mind and spirit, restoring and maintaining health in the body by developing strength, balance and flexibility. It can be physically very demanding but it’s also versatile enough for practitioners of all levels and all ages to work at their own pace. Yoga is a spiritual science of self-realisation. It originated in India and dates back more than five thousand years. The Indian sage Pantanjali, in his Yoga Sutras, defined yoga as « the control of the activities of the mind ». Yoga methods encompass the entire field of our existence; from the physical, emotional and the mental to the spiritual. Its methods include ethical disciplines, physical postures and breath control as well as meditation. Classical yoga, as defined by Patanjali, is an eight-stage process of spiritual development; these stages are commonly referred to as the eight « limbs » of yoga. The first two stages (or limbs) are ethical disciplines (Yamas and Nyamas, in Sanskrit). The third and fourth stages are postures (Asanas) and breathing exercises (Pranayama). The last four stages are meditative stages: control of the senses (Prathyara), concentration (Dharana), meditation (Dhyana) and enlightenment (Samadhi). Yoga has become a very common term in the Western world today. It seeks to promote health and well-being through physical exercise. The regular practice of postures and breathing exercises makes the body strong, supple and healthy. It has a profound effect on the circulation and on the functioning of the inner organs, glands and nerves – making you healthier and happier, giving you greater energy and improving your concentration.
